- August - Demi Moore appears on the cover of Vanity Fair, wearing nothing but a painted suit created by Joanne Gair. The photo becomes one of the best-known examples of modern bodypainting artwork.
- September 24 - Madonna models for Frensh fashion designer Jean-Paul Gaultier at a fashion show in Los Angeles, wearing an open bust pinstripe dress exposing her breasts. The show raises $750,000 for the American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR).
- October 21 - Madonna publishes her book Sex which shows her in provocative and fetish-related poses photographed by Steven Meisel.
